I had read a couple of reviews saying this was terrible. It wasn't. Not completely at least. I mean, yes, it was a tad predictable at times. I mean yes, there was a love triangle.. but it wasn't as bad as warned. The main character is another YA heroine totally unaware of her charms; She even describes herself as mediocre: in appearance, in intelligence, in talent. But how one thinks themselves mediocre when one possesses a secret super power is beyond me. (Hmm, come to think of it, it does make sense especially if one considers that mediocrity is what she strove at being to go unnoticed.) So she thinks herself mediocre.. another surprise is finding her the focus of two boys. One troubled, the other perfect and both hot. So With our triangle in place we have need of a foe. The school it seems is the foe. The Academy is more than just an academy of talented kids.. its a school for "talented" kids. Think Hex Hall meets Xavier's School for the Gifted (did I get that right?) Except, the students themselves are unaware that the school is such.Yet, even if it was predictable.. a little corny at times.. I liked it. Knowing fully well that this is YA PNR and not blow-your-mind-time-to-think-or-analyse-reading, THE CANDIDATES is good enough to pass the afternoon with.
