Hooked - Liz Fichera 2.25/5This is a hard one to place especially since I do enjoy a good opposites attract story except the two made it so difficult to like them together. Anything bad that could happen did… to her at least, yet nothing, not even the worst most inappropriate name could rile her. Instead it’s almost always eyes on the ground and make like you’re a small object with Fred. Sad and oh-so-frustrating simultaneously! It was all ‘woe is me,’ ‘pitiful, pitiful me’ and there I was: waiting for her to do doing something - anything- about it! Whilst all that’s taking place, he’s just there, failing to man up and do something, too. Not that I wanted a knight in shining armor for her. No, not that at all! It’s just that there’s a painful absence of manning up and doing the right thing on his part; then from her end, there’s that slightly more painful non-action as well. There’s that undeniable attraction between the two… that’s impossible, because she is from where she is, and so is he... or was it impossible, really? The sudden change of heart in one of them happened so suddenly, but what happens because of it while a bit “I saw that coming’” was a sweet respite for the girl. Her home life’s not as easy as his, her school life is not as easy too, but the two pairing up added something extra for the girl, beyond golf. I mean consider all those complications: a mother whose bitter about her lot in life and not afraid to say so, a father struggling just to keep up, and a school filled with people who see things a certain way and believe that people should fill certain roles. Bottom line, that the girl was most likely overwhelmed by it all is felt completely. It’s clear life’s not been a bed of roses for her.Yet the one aspect I actually liked about the girl and the story relates to, of all things, GOLF! On the green, she’s so sure of herself, knows what to do and has a confidence that’s unshakeable; totally different from the way she was elsewhere. It’s a sad contrast because she absolutely feels like she has so little going for her.As it stands though I’m left feeling like there could have been more. This could have been more than the YA Romeo and Juliet it turned out to be… because there were so many directions the story could have gone. THANK YOU NETGALLEY
