Frigid (Frigid, #1) by J. Lynn

Frigid takes the old best friend wanting to be more trope and throws in a twist that should have made things deadly-dangerous, heightening the tension and all that. Only here said twist is a bit too far out to heighten anything.

1. We begin with the obvious: she’s in love with him and he doesn’t know it.

2. Double up on the drama by having the latter feel the same way for her. (Hint: there’s a lot of raising the other on some pedestal.) What needless drama of one seeing the other better, pegging either self as less! I mean, why again?

3. But wait, let’s complicate matters: why not have the boy play Prince Player Von uber Douche. (And he plays the role ever so well. (Argh!)

4. But mellow things down and allow for the sexy… made possible by him revealing his softer side.

5. Ratchet up the tension (because happily-ever-after’s can be oh so boring sometimes) and have his past come biting them both in the ass.

And it’s that last that’s’ the kicker. It was OK, their back and forth of I love him/her but don’t deserve him/her. It was OK, that sudden about face on both their parts with the need to get things said and them doing something about it. But see, that sudden turn into psychological thriller, felt out of whack. Like, where’d that come from? Only not really: Because there was no “thrill” in this thriller wannabe to speak of. There’s no need to figure anything out, no need to piece together who was doing what or even why. It was simply SO obvious... and in the end, I felt totally unnecessary. And if that weren’t bad enough, well… there’s all the after-the-fact’s. Her reaction? My god, no wonder she felt she didn’t deserve the guy! Then his reaction? My god! Man up, please!

So events in this switch from cutesy awkward to dangerous and deadly... and yet, I'm all "Eh."
