Long Lankin - Lindsey Barraclough This isn’t just a horror story… and that’s what I enjoyed most because were it just about creepy portraits, bricked up door ways, teeth falling out and ghostly apparitions, well I’d have been bored out of my mind. The story builds up slowly and you know each and everyone of the characters and why they are they way they are by the end of the story, but the author does take her time, doesn’t she? It took me awhile to get used to how deliberately things are held back then given: bit by bit by bit, slowly. Here's what I did enjoy: A lot of this starts with someone or other feeling put upon: Cora being the older girl gets to take care of years younger little sister Mimi; as is Auntie Ida, reclusive and scary, saddled with two of them. They’re absolutely true to what they’re feeling and they pretend to feel anything but put on. For Cora it’s because she actually does feel put upon, being older sister and all... but for their elder, there are some darker reasons. Then the other half of the story is Roger who’s not as burdened as his female counterpart but likes to act that way. Another bit of this story is this new uncomplicated friendship built between the two… and it really is uncomplicated. Then there’s all the family mystery and secrets kept… there’s that in spades. I read this about a month late perhaps as this would have been an appropriate Halloween read.
